SeaWord’s expedition programs provide unique opportunities for a wide variety of scientific discovery projects. In
partnership with Tethys Research, SeaWord will conduct targeted microbial biodiversity studies that can lead to breakthroughs in
• Drug discovery and pharmaceutical synthesis
• Cancer treatment
• Bioremediation
• Reducing soil and groundwater pollution due to industrial chemical manufacturing
The oceans contain the largest unexplored reservoir of microbial biodiversity on Earth. We will collect and culture microorganisms from unusual marine environments. The new species will contribute to our understanding of Earth as an ecosystem in addition to being the necessary raw material for the detection of new biocatalysts.
